Adele's 'early-life crisis' before epic transformation - boozing, partying and misery

Singer Adele admitted she went through an 'early-life crisis' when she was 'drinking too much', feeling 'unhappy' and even cancelled a tour to party with a boyfriend

Adele went through a self-confessed "early-life crisis" and admitted she was "drinking too much" and even cancelled a tour to party with an ex-boyfriend.

The singer, 32, has gone through an epic transformation in recent years - shedding more than three stone in weight and getting fit.

However, she credits a massive lifestyle shift with a lot of the changes as in recent years she cut back on the drinking that had previously dominated her personal life and work.

Back in 2008, she scrapped a series of dates on her US tour due to "family issues" but later confessed she was in the middle of a crisis.

Adele said she was boozing far too much and her partying was part of her relationship with an ex-boyfriend - who she confessed she'd cancelled her tour dates to be with.

In a candid interview with Nylon magazine, Adele explained: "I was really unhappy at home and there was a lot of family issues going on... But I got better again - I stopped drinking.

"We refer to that period as my E.L.C., my Early Life Crisis. Now I'm sober, I'm like, 'I can't believe I did that.' It seems so ungrateful.

"I was drinking far too much and that was kind of the basis of my relationship with this boy. I couldn't bear to be without him, so I was like, 'Well, OK, I'll just cancel my stuff then.'"

Adele went on to split from the boyfriend in question, and the break down of the relationship former her second album 21, which was released in 2011 and featured her chart-topper Rolling In The Deep.

In a later interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Adele insisted alcohol used to be a huge part of her writing process but she cut back after becoming a mum to son Angelo in 2012.

She told the publication: "I used to love to be drunk, but as I got more famous I would wake up the next morning and think, ‘What the f**k did I say and who the f**k did I say it to?’

"I never had blackouts, but when you’re drunk and you go to a party, you’ll talk to anyone.

"I can see from an outsider’s perspective that I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on 21, but I’m not as indulgent as I was then, and I don’t have time to fall apart like I did then."

She added of her writing process: "I was completely off my face writing that album [21], and a drunk tongue is an honest one.

"I would drink two bottles of wine, and I would chain-smoke. Then I’d write the lyrics down and the next morning think, ‘Fuck, that’s quite good’. Then I’d find the melody.

“But since I’ve had my baby, I’m not as carefree as I used to be."
