2020 NBA Draft Profile: CJ Elleby, SG, Washington St.

OVERVIEW

Elleby averaged 18.4 points – capped by a 30-point performance against Colorado — and 7.8 rebounds as a Washington State sophomore. Eight times, he reached the 25-point mark, so he became accustomed to putting up some big numbers. He reached a double-figure point total in all except four games.

He has a scorer’s mentality after posting 14.7 points per game as a freshman. He shot 41.4 percent on 3-pointers as a freshman, a number that dipped to 33.9 as a sophomore.

He was largely viewed as a scorer and often the rest of his abilities didn’t receive such extensive critiques. He’s going to have to offer more in order for teams to be serious about using a draft choice on him.

ANALYSIS

There were times in college where a bulk of attention from opposing teams was focused on Elleby, so he could benefit from blending in on an NBA court. Still, he’s probably a sleeper choice if he’s selected in the draft.

His shot selection has been criticized, though there were also signs during his second college season that he made progress in that area. He’ll need to fill out his frame as he’s listed at 200 pounds and that could put him in some tough matchups at the NBA level, particularly if he’s forced into the lane. He tacked on at least 15 pounds since he arrived on campus, so he’s capable of working on his body.

His length is an asset and that could make him a tough matchup for some small forwards.
